We flew to Lalibela to see the churches that were carved into the
granite 40 feet down during the 13th century by King Lalibela. Here is
the roof. All churches are still used by Orthodox Christians.

Farm houses are very spread out on the barren landscape. They have
rain for the three months of our summer and grow tiff as a main bread
grain.. The bread looks like spongy pita called injia. (sp.) Kids
seldom attend school because they are kept home to help their parents
and they would walk 3 hours roundtrip to get to school each day.

The tourist traffic is so poor in Egypt. The entire bell staff of our
hotel came out to say goodbye. We were the main group in a nineteen
story Four Seasons Hotel.
